SmartExam

Powerful Digital Examinations. No Internet Required to Run Them.

SmartExam is an offline-first Computer Based Testing platform for schools. It supports direct school users and authorised providers. Direct school users can import questions, manage exams, automatically mark objective questions, and conduct supported examinations locally. Authorised providers can generate licence keys or configuration templates, manage activation pools, and distribute licences within permitted provider rights. Internet access is required for licence activation or reverification, importing questions from SmartSchool, and software updates.

Why schools choose SmartExam

Built for examination environments where reliability matters more than features.

Choose your plan

Every plan includes a full Forge licence. Pick the size that matches your exam hall.

Product features

What the application does — independent of which plan you buy.

Conduct Exams Offline

Run supported examinations without an active internet connection after the required setup and licence validation. Keep teaching and assessment moving even when internet connectivity is unreliable.

Automatic Objective Marking

Automatically score supported objective questions and reduce the time spent marking scripts and calculating results manually.

Local Examination Storage

Keep examination packages, student responses, and results on your designated local computer rather than relying on continuous cloud access.

Local Network Examination

Use a designated host computer to deliver supported examinations to compatible devices connected through your local network. Internet access is not required for normal supported local examination activity.

Import from SmartSchool

Connect to the SmartSchool portal to import supported examination questions and prepare them for offline use. This import process requires internet access.

Generate and Export Results

Manage examination outcomes locally and export supported results for school records and further processing.

Licence and Activation Management

Use a valid annual licence with defined limits for computer activations, stored examinations, connected devices, and concurrent sessions according to your purchased plan.

Software Updates

Connect to the internet when checking for and downloading available software updates so your installation can receive supported improvements and fixes.

Provider Activation Pool Management

Providers can manage allocated activation slots. Each activation consumes one slot. Deleting an activated licence, removing a client, or deactivating an installation does not restore the slot. Verify client details before activating.

Licence Protection and Anti-Piracy

SmartExam uses licence protection mechanisms. Repeated suspicious attempts to bypass licence verification, manipulate activation codes, or engage in software piracy may lead to suspension or revocation under applicable terms and verification procedures.

Capacity Guidance for Larger Deployments

SmartExam is designed to support up to 500 connected PCs at a time under suitable system, hardware, and network conditions. Larger deployments may require an additional SmartExam installation and supporting infrastructure. Contact support for capacity planning.

Provider and Direct User Terms

Direct school users and providers must comply with licence limits, fair usage rules, anti-piracy terms, update policies, and data protection responsibilities. By activating, distributing, or using a SmartExam licence, you accept the applicable terms.

How it works

From preparation to synced results.

Problems it solves

Unreliable Internet During Examination Periods

SmartExam supports local examination delivery so supported exams can run without continuous internet access after setup and required licence validation.

High Printing Costs

Deliver supported examinations digitally to compatible devices and reduce dependence on printed question papers.

Time Consumed by Manual Objective Marking

Automatically score supported objective questions and simplify result processing.

Difficulty Conducting Exams Across Multiple Devices

Use supported local network functionality to deliver examinations from a designated host computer to connected student devices.

Dependence on Cloud Storage for Exam Day

Keep supported examination data locally so normal examination operations do not depend on continuous cloud connectivity.

Unclear Software Licensing Limits

Choose a plan with a defined validity period and specified limits for activations, stored exams, LAN devices, and concurrent sessions.

Manual Transfer of Questions from the School Portal

Import supported questions from SmartSchool while online, then prepare and conduct compatible examinations locally.

Provider Activation Slots Lost by Accident

Verify client details before activation. Each activation consumes a slot permanently, and deleting a client or installation does not restore it.

Unauthorised Redistribution or Resale of Licence Keys

Provider terms prohibit redistribution, duplication, or resale outside permitted provider rights. Anti-piracy measures may suspend or revoke affected licences.

Capacity Planning Beyond 500 Connected PCs

Use an additional SmartExam installation with supporting infrastructure and contact support for larger deployment guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is SmartExam?

SmartExam by SmartSchool is an offline first computer based testing application for schools. It helps schools prepare and conduct supported digital examinations, automatically mark objective questions, manage examination records, and use compatible devices on a local network.

Does SmartExam require internet access?

Not for normal supported local examination operations after setup and required licence validation. Internet access is required for initial licence activation, licence reverification when requested, importing questions from the SmartSchool portal, and downloading software updates. Some additional online features, if introduced, may also require connectivity.

Can we conduct examinations when there is no internet?

Yes. SmartExam is designed to run supported examinations locally without continuous internet connectivity. The computer must already be set up, the required examination materials must be available locally, and the licence must remain valid under the application's licence enforcement rules.

How does SmartExam work offline?

Think of the offline experience as transferring and using files between nearby devices with a tool such as Xender. The key idea is that devices can communicate locally without relying on the public internet. SmartExam is an examination application, not a file sharing application, and local device connections depend on its supported network setup.

Does every student's device need internet access?

Not for supported examinations delivered over a properly configured local network. Devices must meet SmartExam's compatibility requirements and be able to connect to the designated host computer. Internet access may still be needed for separate online operations.

What requires internet data?

Internet data is required for licence activation, licence reverification when requested, importing supported questions from the SmartSchool portal, and checking for or downloading software updates. Normal supported local examination delivery, response collection, and other local operations are designed to work without continuous internet access.

Does SmartSchool back up our examination data?

No. SmartExam is designed to store supported examination data locally, and SmartSchool does not provide routine cloud backup of the examination questions, student responses, or results stored on your computer through this application. Your school is responsible for creating, securing, and testing its own backups.

Can SmartSchool access the examinations we conduct?

SmartExam is designed around local examination storage. SmartSchool does not routinely access the examination questions, student responses, or results stored locally on your system. The licensing service communicates with the server for activation and licence reverification, while importing questions from the SmartSchool portal requires internet access. Any explicitly configured online integration operates according to its functionality and applicable privacy terms.

Where are our examination records stored?

Supported examination records are stored locally on the computer running SmartExam. The exact files and storage locations depend on the application version. Protect the computer, restrict unauthorised access, and keep verified backups in a separate secure location.

What does licence duration mean?

Licence duration is the validity period in days. A duration of 365 days represents approximately one year of licence validity according to the licence start date and expiry rules enforced by the system. Renew your licence before expiry to maintain continued authorised use.

What does maximum activations mean?

Maximum activations is the number of computers that may be activated under a licence. For example, a limit of one allows one computer activation. If you reach your limit, you may need to deactivate an existing installation where supported, purchase a plan with more activations, or contact support. Uninstalling the application does not necessarily release an activation automatically.

What does maximum LAN devices mean?

This is the maximum number of compatible student devices permitted to connect to the host computer for supported local network examinations, subject to the technical limits and enforcement implemented in your application. Network quality and computer performance can affect the practical experience.

What does maximum exams mean?

This is the maximum number of examination records or packages that may be stored in the application, according to its counting rules. It does not automatically mean the number of questions or students. Export and back up records before removing them. Your plan's limit should be verified against the current application implementation.

What does maximum concurrent sessions mean?

This is the maximum number of examination sessions allowed to run at the same time, if the limit is enforced by your application version. For example, a limit of two means up to two sessions may be active simultaneously. This is different from the total number of sessions conducted over the licence period.

What does data retention mean?

Data retention specifies how long eligible closed examination sessions remain in the system before they may be deleted under the configured policy. A setting of 720 hours equals 30 days. Export and verify backups before the retention period expires. Do not assume records are backed up to the cloud.

What happens when our licence expires?

The licence may stop authorising protected application operations according to the licence enforcement rules. Renew your licence to continue authorised use. Export important results and create verified backups before expiry, and contact support if you need assistance with renewal or activation.

Can we move our licence to another computer?

Licence transfer depends on your plan and the activation management process supported by the licensing service. Contact support for assistance if you need to replace a computer or transfer an activation. Uninstalling SmartExam does not necessarily release an activation automatically.

Are examination results automatically uploaded to SmartSchool?

Do not assume that results are automatically uploaded or backed up online. SmartExam is designed to store examination data locally. Use the export and integration functions available in your installed version and follow the applicable instructions for any supported transfer to SmartSchool.

What are the terms and conditions for using SmartExam?

By purchasing, activating, installing, or using SmartExam, your institution agrees to use the software under its purchased licence, within the permitted duration and plan limits, and in compliance with applicable law. The licence is for the purchasing institution and authorised use under the selected plan. You must not redistribute or resell the software or licence keys, tamper with licence or update mechanisms, or bypass technical restrictions except where applicable law permits. Your institution is responsible for examination administration, authorised user access, student data handling, required notices and permissions, device security, and backups. SmartSchool may issue software updates and revise applicable terms with appropriate notice where required. Nothing in these terms removes rights that cannot legally be excluded.

What is the SmartExam fair usage policy?

SmartExam must be used for legitimate educational assessment and other authorised institutional purposes. Do not share licence keys outside the licensed institution, exceed plan limits through circumvention, interfere with licensing or update services, attempt unauthorised access, distribute modified or unauthorised copies, or use the software for unlawful activity. Keep activation credentials secure, protect examination computers and local networks, and maintain backups. Custom deployment, special integrations, or support outside the purchased plan may require a separate agreement. Where permitted by law and the applicable agreement, SmartSchool may investigate suspected misuse and restrict affected licence access.

Who is responsible for data security and backups?

Your institution is responsible for securing its computers, controlling access, protecting student information, and maintaining independent backups of locally stored examination materials and results. SmartSchool is responsible for the licensing and online services it operates, subject to the applicable terms. No storage method should be treated as a guarantee against data loss.

Does SmartExam guarantee that data will never be lost?

No. Hardware failure, accidental deletion, malware, theft, damage, or other incidents can cause data loss. Maintain multiple secure backups, keep at least one copy separate from the examination computer, and test that your backups can be restored.

How much does SmartExam cost?

SmartExam is offered through annual licence plans. The plans on this page show the limits that apply. Check the activation, LAN device, examination storage, and concurrent session limits of each plan before purchasing, and contact support for a current quotation.

How can we get help?

For licence activation, renewal, installation, or supported functionality enquiries, contact support@smartschool.sch.ng. Include your school name, SmartExam version, a description of the issue, and any relevant error message. Do not send passwords or confidential student examination data unless specifically required through an approved secure support process.
